Kuala Lumpur is a very modern place but not especially exciting. The drive in to KL was very exciting. The two of us worked in harmony, me navigating and Julian driving, to find our hotel in the foreign city. It might not sound like much but each country has it's own way of driving and entering KL was our first experience at a large asian city(Singapore doesn't count as the driving is so docile). It was exciting stuff. Over the next few days we saw as much as we could in between the visits to various embassies. The two highlights for us where the national mosque and the Petronas towers.
Petronas is the national oil and gas company of Malaysia and is entirely government owned. It has also built a building whose architecture looks both contemporary and historical in the same breath and I loved it. We went on the rather expensive tour of the building that takes you to the overpass between the two towers are up to the observation deck at the top of the Eastern tower. It was night and raining so most of my photos look like they belong on 'Blade Runner'. As this is my favourite movie this is fine with me. I hope you like them. Afterwards we went to a rooftop bar that overlooked the towers and enjoyed a beer or two.
Malaysia was our first Islamic country and for me this meant an opportunity to finally enjoy some Islamic architecture. The national mosque in KL was one of the most impressive modern buildings I have seen. The ability of the architect to create a sense of peace and reflection in a contemporary language was truly impressive. I loved this building.
